Transplant Patient Guide

Azathioprine
(also known as Imuran)

Dosage
Usually between 25 to 150 mg per day. This dose is based on your white blood cell (immune cells) count and required frequent blood tests.

Action
An immunosuppressive drug which works by decreasing the number of T-lymphocytes (immune cells) in the blood. T-lymphocytes may detect and attack the transplanted organ.

Side effects

  • lowering of the entire white blood cell count--this puts you at risk for developing infections
